Skills you’ll acquire

After completing this course you’ll be able to:

Earn your certification

Once you’ve successfully completed your course, you’ll receive a digital certificate of completion from Bushwise. The certificate will state that you’ve passed the Introduction to Field Guiding online course. This, combined with the Bushwise Nature Enthusiast certificate, will enable you to take your next step in becoming a safari guide, joining us for practical work in South Africa. You’ll then be able to write the theory exam towards your CATHSSETA Nature Site Guide (NQF2) qualification. Join us in person to gain practical experience and become a fully-fledged guide!

The course begins with an introduction to the skills required by expert safari guides.

Next, you’ll learn how to create a tailored guided experience, adapting your drive or walk to the clients’ interests and managing their expectations. You’ll see how conducting research beforehand can help you make strategic decisions before the drive and take key opportunities during the drive by thinking on your feet.

You’ll also learn how to care for clients on your drive and walk. This will include learning how to make clients feel at ease, make yourself approachable and solve problems. You’ll learn several communication skills to help you accomplish this.

Moving on, you’ll cover the entire guided experience process, from pre-briefing to debriefing. Learn best practices in field guiding and how to incorporate your environmental knowledge into the experience. You’ll also explore the qualifications and legal requirements needed to become a safari guide.

Next is a module on radio procedures, including how to use a two-way radio, proper protocols during wildlife sightings and briefing guests on emergency radio use.

In Module 5, you’ll study how to safely view potentially dangerous animals as a trails guide. Learn how to interpret animal behaviour and lead safe, ethical encounters. You’ll also complete training in basic and advanced rifle handling, covering safety, maintenance and responsible firearm use with bolt-action rifles.

The final section focuses on preparing for your Bushwise and CATHSSETA Nature Site Guide (NQF2) theory exams and taking the next steps toward a safari guiding career.

Throughout the course, you can attend masterclasses on topics like Southern African wildlife, elephant and vulture conservation, anti-poaching, bird photography, African folklore and key strategies for managing nature and wildlife reserves.
